How it works

Enter your gross salary per month or year, your tax class, the number of children and your state. Tick church membership if it applies, and adjust the additional health insurance contribution.

Income tax, the solidarity surcharge and the base for church tax come from the official 2026 payroll tax algorithm of the Federal Ministry of Finance. Social insurance is each contribution rate times your salary, up to the 2026 contribution ceilings. What remains is your net salary.

Formula and worked example

Net salary = gross − income tax − solidarity surcharge − church tax − pension − unemployment − health − care insurance.

For 4,000 € a month, tax class I, no children, 2.9 % additional contribution:

  1. Pension insurance (9.3 %): €372.00
  2. Unemployment insurance (1.3 %): €52.00
  3. Health insurance (7.3 % + 1.45 %): €350.00
  4. Care insurance (1.8 % + 0.6 % without children): €96.00
  5. Income tax (official algorithm): €524.50
  6. Net salary: €2,605.50

Frequently asked questions

How is net salary calculated in Germany?

Gross salary minus income tax (Lohnsteuer), solidarity surcharge, church tax if you are a member, and the employee shares of pension, unemployment, health and long-term care insurance. Income tax depends on your tax class; the other items are percentages of your salary up to ceilings.

What do the tax classes mean?

Class I is for single people, II for single parents, III and V for married couples where one partner earns much more (III the higher earner, V the lower), IV for couples with similar incomes, and VI for a second job. The class changes the monthly tax withheld, not the final tax for the year.

Why is my net different in the tax return?

The monthly withholding follows a standard formula. Your tax return uses your real costs and allowances, so you can get money back or owe more. This calculator shows the monthly withholding.

Which social insurance rates are used?

Employee shares for 2026 of pension 9.3 %, unemployment 1.3 %, health 7.3 % plus half of the additional contribution, and long-term care 1.8 % (more in Saxony and for childless adults over 23, less with several children). Pension and unemployment stop at 8,450 € a month, health and care at 5,812.50 €.

What additional contribution should I enter?

The one your health insurer charges. The official average for 2026 is 2.9 %, which is the default here. Your insurer's website or your payslip shows the exact figure.

Are private health insurance, minijobs and bonuses included?

Not in this version. The calculator covers a regular salary with statutory insurance. Private insurance, minijobs, the transition zone, one-off payments and tax-card allowances are left out.

How does church tax work?

If you belong to a church that collects tax, it is 8 % of your income tax in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria and 9 % elsewhere. Children lower the base because their allowances reduce the tax it is calculated on.

What changed in 2026?

The tax and contribution figures used here are those published for 2026 by the Federal Ministry of Finance and the social insurance authorities; the sources are listed below. Rates and ceilings are set again each year.
