How it works
Choose whether to add VAT to a net amount or remove it from a gross amount. Pick the country and which of its rates to use, or enter your own rate. The calculator shows the net amount, the VAT and the gross amount.
Rates are rounded to the cent. When adding VAT, the VAT is rounded and added to the net. When removing VAT, the net is rounded and the VAT is the difference, so net plus VAT always equals gross.
Formula and worked example
Gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100). Net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). VAT = gross − net.
For 1,000 net at Germany’s standard rate:
- VAT: 190
- Gross: 1,190
And removing VAT from 1,000 gross at Hungary’s 27 % standard rate:
- Net: 787.4
See all rates in the EU VAT rates table.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by the VAT rate and add the result. At 19 %, a net price of 1,000 has 190 of VAT, so the gross price is 1,190. Equivalent shortcut - multiply the net price by 1.19.
How do I remove VAT from a gross price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 19 %, a gross price of 119 divided by 1.19 is 100 net, and the VAT is 19. Do not subtract 19 % of the gross price; that gives the wrong answer.
Which rate applies to my product?
Each country sets its own rates and decides which goods and services get the reduced ones. Food, books, passenger transport and hotels are often reduced, but it differs. Check the national tax authority or ask an adviser for your product.
What are reduced, super-reduced and parking rates?
The reduced rate is a lower rate for listed goods and services. A few countries have an even lower super-reduced rate, and some keep a parking rate of at least 12 % for goods that used to be reduced. The calculator lists the rates each country has.
How current are the rates?
They are the national rates in force on the date shown under the result, taken from the European Commission's Taxes in Europe Database and checked against national sites where possible. Rates change, so confirm before issuing invoices.
Does it handle reverse charge or cross-border sales?
No. It applies one national rate to one amount. Cross-border rules such as reverse charge and the one-stop shop need your tax adviser.
