How it works

Choose whether you start from a salary or from an hourly rate. Enter the amount, the pay period of the salary, your hours per week and the number of weeks you are paid. The calculator works out the yearly pay and the paid hours in a year, then divides or multiplies.

The result also shows the same pay per week, per month and per year, so you can compare offers quoted in different ways.

Formula and worked example

Hourly rate = yearly pay ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks). Yearly pay = hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks.

For 60,000 a year at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks:

  1. Paid hours per year: 40 × 52 = 2,080
  2. Hourly rate: 60,000 ÷ 2,080 = 28.85
  3. Per month: 5,000

And from an hourly rate of 20:

  • Yearly pay: 41,600

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a yearly salary to an hourly wage?

Divide the yearly salary by the paid hours in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that is 2,080 hours, so 60,000 a year is about 28.85 an hour.

How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours per week and by the paid weeks per year. 20 an hour for 40 hours and 52 weeks is 41,600 a year.

Should I use 52 weeks?

Use 52 if you are paid for holidays and paid leave, which is typical for a salary. If you are not paid for some weeks, enter the weeks you are paid; your hourly rate for the same yearly pay will then be higher.

Is this before or after tax?

Before tax. The calculator works with the gross amount you enter and does not deduct tax or social contributions.

Does it work in any currency?

Yes. It does not convert currencies; the numbers come out in the same currency you enter.

How are the monthly and weekly figures worked out?

Monthly is the yearly amount divided by 12, and weekly is the yearly amount divided by your paid weeks. Each figure is rounded to two decimals on its own.
