How it works

Enter your one-way distance in kilometres and the days you travel to work in a year. Choose whether you travel by car or by other means. The calculator multiplies the full kilometres by 0.38 € and by the days, applies the 4,500 € cap where it applies, and shows the deduction.

To estimate the tax you save, enter your taxable income. The calculator compares the income tax with and without the deduction using the 2026 tariff.

Formula and worked example

Allowance = full km × 0.38 € × days at the workplace. Cap: 4,500 € (not with an own or provided car).

For 20 km and 220 days:

  1. Allowance per working day: €7.60
  2. Allowance for the year: €1,672.00
  3. Estimated tax saved at 40,000 € taxable income: €524.00

Frequently asked questions

How much is the commuter allowance in 2026?

0.38 € for each full kilometre of the one-way distance, for each day you go to your first place of work. The same rate applies from the first kilometre.

Is there a maximum?

Yes, 4,500 € per year, unless you drive your own or a company car, in which case the cap does not apply. If you use public transport and your actual costs are higher than the allowance, the costs count instead.

How do I count the distance?

Use the shortest road connection between home and your first place of work, one way, and only full kilometres. 12.9 km counts as 12 km.

How many days can I claim?

Each day you actually travel to your first place of work. Typical full-time values are about 210 to 230 days, depending on holidays, sick days and home-office days. Use the working days calculator for a figure.

How much tax will I really save?

It depends on your income and your other work-related costs. The calculator estimates it with the 2026 income tax tariff on the taxable income you enter. The Arbeitnehmer-Pauschbetrag of 1,230 € is deducted anyway, so a small commuter allowance may change nothing if your total costs stay below it.

Is the allowance paid out as money?

No. It lowers your taxable income in your tax return (or through the tax-free amount on your tax card), which lowers the tax you pay.
