A 2,000 € Christmas bonus on a 4,000 € monthly salary in tax class I leaves about €1,071.00 after tax and social insurance if it is paid in November.
—
How it works
Enter your regular gross salary, the bonus and the month it is paid. The calculator taxes the bonus the way a payroll system does: the tax is the difference between the tax on your yearly salary with the bonus and without it, using the official 2026 payroll algorithm. Social insurance is due on the part of the bonus that fits under the pro rata contribution ceilings.
Formula and worked example
Net bonus = bonus − income tax on the bonus − solidarity surcharge − church tax − contributions.
For a 2,000 € bonus on 4,000 € a month, paid in November, tax class I:
- Income tax on the bonus: €494.00
- Pension insurance (9.3 %): €186.00
- Health insurance: €175.00
- Net bonus: €1,071.00
Frequently asked questions
Why is a Christmas bonus taxed so heavily?
Your employer withholds the tax as if the bonus were part of one year of pay, so it is taxed at the top rate of your yearly income. It is not a special rate. Your tax return settles the final tax, and the withheld amount is often close to it.
Do I pay social insurance on the bonus?
Yes, up to the contribution ceilings. The ceilings count for the months up to the payment, and your regular salary uses part of the room first. A high earner may owe none.
Does the month of payment matter?
It does for the ceilings. A payment in December has the full year of room left, a payment in January only one month. The calculator uses the month you choose.
Is the 13th salary the same thing?
For tax and social insurance, yes. Any one-off payment such as a holiday bonus, a performance bonus or a 13th salary is calculated the same way.
Which tax class is best for a bonus?
Class III withholds the least and class V the most on a bonus, as on the regular salary. The final tax is settled in your tax return, so the class changes the timing more than the total.
Why does a bonus paid in January to March differ?
A special rule can allocate such payments to the previous year for social insurance. The calculator does not apply it, so treat results for these months as an estimate.
